Inner Peace is a Gift we can Achieve

,

One of the most valuable gifts we can experience is the pleasure of inner peace. What does inner peace mean to you? Inner peace is about feeling calm, feeling at ease, it’s feeling tranquil. Inner peace can be achieved through various ways, nature, meditation, breath work or yoga, these are popular mechanisms to achieve inner peace. The question is, what happens after we finish our inner peace practice or expression? What happens when we go about our everyday lives?

Another perspective on the meaning of inner peace, is centred on a belief system, which is, who are you and where do you come from within, otherwise known as the “I am”. Some people say, it’s your centre, your spirit, your soul, your divine self, known spiritually and in different languages and cultures, that translates to the “I am”. The “I am” is the concept that we are all energy beings living in a human body, the concept of knowing, who you are and where you came from can be a pivotal factor in assisting us focus on our own inner peace.

The “I am” is mentioned several times in the Bible, one such reference is: John 11:17, verse: 25-26, “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:  And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.” This is referring to the reincarnation and living eternally and is expressed in the Christian faith, other faiths mention this too. What you believe is up to you, some people do find the concept of the “I am”, the concept that we reincarnate and are energy beings as being helpful in the notion that we are more than just our physical selves. Is this belief system helpful when we go about our daily lives? The belief in that deeper connection and a deeper meaning of life?

For me, inner peace also comes from the power of choice, choosing how to respond to any given situation without lettings emotions kick in and take over.  If someone is making an unkind remark to you, do you a) ignore it, b) respond by going above the line in a constructive helpful way or do you c) go below the line to respond with a low blow, a snarly remark that doesn’t assist in anyway. Are you able to lift the conversation up, to elevate it and respond in the way you want to, that you feel represents your best self.

All around us, chaos can prevail, and if we can hold ourselves steady in challenging times and do the right thing, without it costing you too much, how incredibly wonderful is that? What is that worth to you? What is it worth to your family? What has your lack of inner peace already cost you? As we go about our everyday lives, with the usual day-to-day, things like managing work, children, running your home, spending time with friends and family, paying bills, driving on our roads with those drivers who cut you off and run orange / red lights, how does it impact you?

My Pa used to love to read to me Rudyard Kipling’s “Just so stories” from a young age and frankly, at that young age, I didn’t understand them much, but I loved my time with my Pa. When Pa passed away, we read at his funeral, Rudyard Kipling’s poem, “If”, which is a beautiful poem focused upon, in short on maintaining inner peace amongst adversary and is representative of the concept of inner peace triumphing over the inner turmoil and overcoming the difficulties life, the challenges and maintaining composure, maintaining your inner peace.

Writer and psychologist, Harriet Lerner says, “Anxiety is contagious. Intensity and reactivity only breed more of the same. Calm is contagious. Nothing is more important than getting a grip on your own reactivity”.  Anxiety, stress, anger, all emotions are contagious, they are catchy it’s just the same as if you have one bad apple, you have to remove it to save the whole bag from rotting, it’s the same with people in a business, you can’t allow the bully in the business to remain, or else you start to breed a culture of bullying and people resign, the impact can be horrendous. If you have negative emotions floating about and they are contagious, what is the impact? How do we remove negative emotions to achieve the goal of inner peace, or at least to strive towards inner peace?

Most people today, in order to try and find peace put things into their bodies to try and achieve inner peace through a process of numbing. Trying to numb yourself through the use of substances like alcohol or drugs, or trying to block out the noise, inner noise, by turning on music to hide all that stuff, all that noise. The reality is, in order to achieve inner peace, we have to take things out. We have to take out the negative talking, energy, thinking and emotions, we need to stop with the negative patterns that have somehow crept in and create positive mindsets, growth mindsets, positive emotions and patterns. How do we do this?

What are the mechanisms, the ways in which we can achieve inner peace?

Breathing: Deep slow abdominal breaths, like a sleeping baby takes, activates your parasympathetic nervous system. This deep breathing stimulates the vagus system, which is apart of the parasympathetic system. This stimulation may help to slow down the heart rate, to lower blood pressure and promotes feelings of calm and relaxation.

Exercise: Mild exercise, such as Pilates, yoga and walking can also activate your parasympathetic nervous system.

Massage: Having a deep tissue massage can also aid in activating your parasympathetic nervous system. The head and neck area when massaged can activate the vagal sensory neurons that activate the parasympathetic nervous system. I recommend Calma Spa and Skin Clinic as our local go-to for highly effective and relaxing massages.

Nature: Spend time in the beautiful energies of nature, be it the green fields with basking big trees or at the seaside, near the salt-water, is such a gift and deeply healing.

Talking therapies

Eye movement Desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy and may be a helpful way of removing unwanted memories, experiences, feelings and thoughts. Acceptance and Commitment therapy, (ACT) a talking psychotherapy, one of my favorite talking therapies, that I have a certification in, focuses on helping individuals accept their thoughts and feelings rather than trying to control them, allowing them to move forward with actions aligned with their personal values and goals, what they want to achieve, even when facing difficult emotions or experience. ACT  aims to increase psychological flexibility by embracing the present moment and uses some mindful techniques, breathing techniques and works on committing to meaningful behavior change.

Meditation

One of the best and cheapest ways to achieve inner peace is through, meditation. For those of you who have children, may have seen, Kung Fu Panda, attempting to meditate and chanting inner peace, inner peace, whilst lots of other thoughts popped into his head, like dumplings, his favourite food. This is typical of the monkey mind, lots of thoughts popping into your mind whilst trying to find peace and stillness. Not all meditations are the same. There are many types of meditations and there is now a lot of scientific validation of the benefits of meditation. Meditation on  mindfulness is trending at present, transcendent meditation, meditation on your breath, the list goes on. Meditation is an ancient concept that modern science has validated as a tool to help build connections in the brain, to lower the heart rate and reduce stress.

It has been proven that the Meditation on Twin Hearts helps reduce stress, promote inner peace and calmness and can help provide clarity as-well as improving overall health. This meditation works on re-structuring the brain. Meditation on Twin Hearts has been proven to help remodel the electrical currents in the brain which help improve mental, cognitive functioning and in turn our physical, emotional and mental health. Master Choa Kok Sui created the Meditation on Twin Hearts, that uses the prayer of St Francis of Assis. It has been clairvoyantly observed that as you use this prayer, that negative energy is removed and disintegrated to a certain extent.
