If you ask someone who is really struggling, to use positive affirmations and to start thinking positively because it will help them, what do you think their response will be? A positive mind-set though does help and has been proven to assist in many studies. Ask a professional athlete, who won the race, or struck the winning blow and won the fight or has aced their way through to take their tennis game, did they doubt themselves? Or did they think they would win? Or if you have met someone who has been to the peaks of Mount Everest, did you ask, did you doubt you would make it?
I have had the pleasure of dinning with a wealthy banker who climbed Mount Everest about two years ago, he said it was the most exhilarating thing he had done. That he couldn’t have done it without his sherpa who carried the load of his items, the daily training, the dietary intake, the planning, the laser focus (all at the same time holding down what can also be described as a mammoth job), the commitment to the task ahead and that mind-set of, “I will climb Mount Everest”, took him over the peak and safely home again. Climbing Mount Everest, it seems is becoming a bit trendy, looking at those photos of the peak and the cue to surf over the top and then, from what I have been told, the decent, being the hardest part. Returning home, to tell their stories of absolute dreamy scales of success, are things most of us, wouldn’t aspire towards or contemplate trying to add into our life. I’m always rather pleased of myself if I succeed in my 5 km jog, in an attempt to keep fit. The scale of dreaming and achieving his goals, that this rather impressive man was able to enjoy, is extraordinary. What ultimately got him over the peak and safely home, was and is that mind-set. I will do this and I am doing this. Personally, when I am exercising, I maintain this mind-set too, that I will run 5km, it helps.
Serena Williams, arguably the most successful female tennis players in the worlds history, is famously quoted for being open about her positive mental attitude and positive self-talk to improve her performance. Serena Williams used statements like, “I can do this” and “I am strong” to maintain her incredible performance and her winning edge.
Talking to Murata, the famous Japanese, middle weight boxing campion, (who has a PHD) and who I also dinned with in Tokyo, I ate with friends, whilst he sipped hot water. Murata has a history of winning boxing belts, under his belt. His humble and almost shy, yet incredibly confident and powerful persona, also struck me as someone who wasn’t going to take no for an answer. Watching him fight to the win was incredible. Also Canello, another middle-weight champion who I sat infront of the ringside, also won and was rather terrifying to watch up close. The blood splattering into the first, maybe second layer of spectators and onlookers.
What professional athlete doesn’t surround them with a team? In my time, from meeting a few professional athletes, given my former husband helped create DAZN, an online live sports streaming service, the first of it’s kind. I can safely say, professional athletes are super-human and a right unto their own, society often worships them as demi-gods. Professional athletes often travel with a team of supporters around them, fans too yes, but I am talking about, mental coaches, physical coaches, chefs, girlfriends, boyfriends, supporters who only want them to win and be successful. This team provides positive support and are getting paid for their professional expertise and for their support. But there is something more to it than this. The team around the sports professional are also, hopefully, all chanting in their heads, “you can do this”, “you can win”, “you are a champion”, or sentiments to this effect. What partner in the crowd have you ever seen look happy at their partners loosing game? It doesn’t happen. The people in their circles are people all seeing and planning and dreaming for their success. They see it, they believe and they are hungry for it.
From my observations, successful businesspersons are the similar in that they have people in their organisations, working together as a team for success. A highly successful business has a team that sees the mission, the vision, the values, the goals and knows, if they hit their goals, the business is successful, they get paid, maybe they even receive a bonus payment and then they all celebrate the businesses success. Having worked at Amazon, Disney, GSK I can see the benefits of companies who also reward their employees with Shares so they feel the businesses success and also reap their rewards. That connection with a company that is able to paint the positive vision clearly, so that everyone can see what success looks like, what a positive outlook looks like, also wins.
How is your mind-set? Is it positive? Do you see yourself winning your battle? The battle to reach your goal, the battle to overcome excessive eating, the battle to overcome anxiety, the battle to overcome stress, the battle to overcome paying stacking bills, the battle to get that promotion at work, the battle to run more than 5km, to run 10km? What steps are you taking to help yourself? Are you seeing the positive vision, have you set your goals? Are you talking to yourself positively? I can do this, I am winning, I am running 10 km, I am a teacher, I am an artist, I am a banker, I am at my goal weight, I am peaceful.
What tools can you use to create a positive mind-set?
Positive affirmations, done daily for several months are a great start to creating your positive mindset and for creating a positive vision for your future. How about you try doing a voice recording and look at yourself in the mirror, look through your eyes and say, choose your own words, but you could use “I am peaceful, I am joyful, I am loving, I am successful, I am prosperous”. And use your visualisation skills to see this, believe this and don’t whatever you do, do not doubt it. No doubts, no fears. See yourself and believe in yourself and do the positive affirmations for the duration specified here and see what results you can have, try it out.
Cultivating positive thinking and creating a positive mindset is part of the work, the other part is the goal setting and having a consistent, disciplined approach to achieve your goals. Stay tuned for the next article to cover this goal setting approach.

Breathing
If you have every witnessed someone having a panic attack, it’s a pretty disturbing sight. My colleague 25 years ago, at a previous job struggled with panic attacks. She would be curled over, breathing into a paper-bag, her head between her knees. Short sharp breaths and that feeling of being suffocated or not being able to breath is a scary place to be and witness. The body can go into a bit of shock with the lack of Oxygen and a fight of flight mode can kick in. This is the opposite type of breathing that supports your positive mind set. Deep slow abdominal breaths, like a sleeping baby takes, foster and supports your positive mind set.
