Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia and according to the WHO foundation, anxiety is the most common mental health condition worldwide, affecting 359 million people. Everyone can feel anxious at some time, but people who have anxiety have this sensation with high intensity that is excessive.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a common mental health condition that is characterized by emotions such as worry, stress, tension, fear, difficulty concentrating. Anxiety is also accompanied often with physical symptoms such as fast heart rate, sweatiness, shortness of breath, difficulty sleeping and nausea. It isn’t just a passing feeling or sensations that causes this discomfort and the cause may not be clear. Behavioral indicators or signs that someone is suffering with anxiety could be that they have avoidance of situations or things, they may shut down or pull away from certain situations and they maybe restless, unable to sit still and move around frequently.
Types of anxiety:
According to the Mayo Clinic, there are several types of anxiety:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Excessive everyday worry about everyday things.
Social Anxiety: A strong fear of being judged or embarrassed in social settings.
Panic Disorders: Intense fear with panic attacks.
Specific Phobias: phobias are fears related to specific things or situations, for example arachnophobia, fear of spiders.
Children and young adults can also suffer with anxiety.
