Our brains, as you know are like super computers and are impactful in every aspect of our lives. How we receive information, learn, process information, problem solve, make decisions and feel.
Optimising cognitive functioning currently is a hot topic, weather it’s executives wanting to level up and maximise their brain power and enhance laser focus and good decision making or people aging wanting to improve their memory or processing skills or people wanting to learn more easily, to name but a few. Cognitive function impact everyone and is important for all. The benefits of having optimal cognitive function cannot be overlooked.
Our brains are responsible for all types of mental cognition and gymnastic performance efforts that to the naked eye are invisible and yet have a profound impact in our day to day lives in every way, from movement, coordination, to memory, intelligence to personality, hearing, vision, speech, behaviour and emotions to name a few.
Our brains often impact our emotions and the state we are often striving for: our happiness. Som Bathla wrote, “Build a Happier Brain”: “The human brain is a complex chemical generation factory. Whatever emotions we feel throughout the day, be they anger, sadness, love, joy, grief, release multiple chemicals through our brain. Let’s talk about happiness chemicals in our brain…there are four neurochemicals that come into play…Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, Endorphins”…Dopamine for pleasure, Serotonin for sleep, digestion, emotional regulation, Oxytocin the love chemical and Endorphins for the happiness chemical. What about chemical imbalances in the brain? Much has been written on this topic, with some debate, there seems to be current agreement a chemical imbalance in the brain causes mood swings, sleep difficulties, poor focus, loss of interest loss of pleasure in daily activities and cognitive difficulties, for example, difficulty in focusing. Noteworthy is that a chemical imbalance may not be the only factor in mental health challenges, such as anxiety or depression, but may contribute to the mental health condition.
The link between gut-health and brain health has been established, they are linked via the vagus nerve and microbiome and share millions of neutrons. Having a healthy gut supports a healthy brain with mental clairty and mood being highly linked. The link between a healthy heart and healthy brain has also been established, with the heart functioning to ensure oxygen circulates through out blood and our brains regulate the heart. Our brain is connected to all of our body and the multiple links in science continue to evolve. The understanding of our brains and what our brains do continues to inspire researchers to learn more about the complexities of the central nervous system, which includes both the brain and the spinal cord.
Factors that impact our brains:
Sleep: Our brains are directly impacted by our sleep as we go through the different cycles of sleep and in our third stage of non-rem sleep, known as deep sleep, the brain is washed with fluids to clean the brain, to remove toxins and restore it. The technical term for this is called: Glymphatic system whereby the cerebrospinal fluid rushes through the brain and helps flush out waste associated with unwanted diseases like Alzheimer’s. Sleep deprovision has a huge impact on brain functionality.
Nutrition: Many nutritional factors impact brain development. Omega-3 fatty oils and healthy fatty oils are essential for cognitive function. Leafy green vegetables, nuts and seeds and berries for antioxidants amongst other benefits are typically recommended to support brain function. Good levels of hydration through water is also ideal. Please note this is not nutrition advice, I would suggest speaking to a nutritionist to understand this and for any personal queries.
Water: Hydration is critical to our brains functionality too, especially in focus, memory, emotional balance, energy and functionality. Our brains are made up of 73% water.
Exercise: Profoundly impactful on our brains, exercise does wonderful things to our brains. It assists in boosting memory (even growing that area in your brain), thinking skills, and stimulates new brain cell growth. Exercise also releases some of those happy chemicals: endorphins and serotonin. Neuroplasticity, our ability to change and adapt and do things differently, is also enhanced through exercise. And furthermore exercise is also linked to reducing and preventing diseases.
Meditation: for those who may need encouragement to meditate, much has been written on the benefits of meditation. The National Library of medicine has written: “meditation physically changes and improves your brain through a process call neuroplacitity . Regular practice alters brain structure, enhances connectivity and boost production of neurotransmitters – ultimately improving focus, emotional regulation and stress resilience”.
Meditation has been known to increase the grey matter, the area in our brain associated with learning, memory and emotional regulation (as above). To shrink the amygdala, our fight or flight centre, so that we are less reactive, less inclined towards stress and anxiety. It boosts happiness chemicals, dopamine and serotonin. Furthermore meditation alters brain waves to shift away from alert, stress status to slower relaxed alpha waves and deeper relaxation state waves.
